What are PBRs?

Photobioreactors, in short, PBRs, are reactors for the light based cultivation of phototrophic micro-organisms such as microalgae. Through photosynthesis, microalgae use light and CO2 to create biomass. In fact, no organism produces more biomass per surface than microalgae. Becoming high quality substance for food, feed, chemistry and energy sectors, microalgae is cultivated in PBRs.

Advantages of closed system PBRs:

  •  No water evaporation and thus low water consumption

  • No contamination and high quality due to the closed system

  • Higher growth rate than in open-pond systems
